here’s been a little debate running through our office on the appropriate time to begin celebrating Christmas. More specifically, when is it okay to start playing the holiday tunes?

As for my family, our kids had Christmas albums playing during our last trip to the coast … in September. So you know where I land in this debate — no rules for celebrating early in the Riley home. ’Tis the season for friendship, feasting, joy and wonder, and I’m all in. You can start whenever you’re ready.

But even as I write this, I’m reminded of the real difficulties we’ve all experienced over the past couple of years. It’s not shiny lights and happy songs for everyone. To just gloss over our personal and collective losses feels disingenuous and insincere. I’ve lost some really special people in my life this past year, and both personal and global tragedy have been a regular reminder that all is not as it should be.

It’s disheartening if I think about it for too long.

Yet the promise of this season is joy for the whole world. Peace and good news to all mankind. Hope that takes the place of silence and desolation. And the birth of redemption in the most unexpected package. Whether you celebrate the birth of Jesus during this season or not, I’m certain that we could all use a little good news right now. I hope that you find love and joy and hope this Christmas.

From all of us at Lifestyle Magazine, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
