ust when you think that you’re going to skate through the summer months, it suddenly turns to triple digits and everyone is looking to cool down any way they can. Whether it’s a trip to the beach, an afternoon poolside or a refreshing drink in hand, keeping a positive attitude goes a long way in surviving the oppressive heat of the Central Valley.
Like every summer, Lifestyle Magazine takes a break from our ever-popular Home Tour and focuses an issue on one of our favorite pastimes, eating. Tulare County is ripe with the freshest of fruits, vegetables, dairy products and a cornucopia of other foods that feed locals and the rest of the world. As a child growing up, one of my favorite memories was making hand-cranked ice cream with my father. He would turn the crank and I would sit on a neatly folded towel atop the maker in an effort to keep the canister submerged beneath the surface.
He’d turn and turn the crank, then I’d beg to let me try. That lasted about a nanosecond before I got tired and returned to my seat atop the maker. That is why I was so excited to see one of July’s recipes, “Mark’s Honey Vanilla Ice Cream” by Wild Oak Coffee House on page 16-18, using only locally sourced ingredients. There is a story behind every flavor he’s made.
Summer also means a bounty of fresh vegetables and, as a home gardener, I am always on the hunt for new ways to use an abundance of tomatoes, squash and herbs from the garden. If you find yourself in the same place, be sure to turn to page 24 for exciting recipes such as Tomato Bisque, Spicy Summer Squash and Chicken Breast With Potatoes and White Wine Sauce. A heartfelt thank you to contributing chef Tate Darwin of Cellar Door.
As we look forward to Independence Day, I hope everyone enjoys the holiday this year while taking extra steps to keep yourselves and your pets safe. The sound of fireworks exploding in the air can be scary to little ears and even a threat to animals. Celebrate, enjoy some refreshing ice cream and be sure to tell us about your special day on one of our social media pages.
Happy reading and we will see you again in August.
